Mortgage Lifter is the only red tomato I grow. It is an heirloom. After many years of experimenting, I have finally found heirloom varieties of everything I want to grow in a northern climate. I save as much of my own seed as I can, and it will significantly decrease my garden expenses for this year. I still have to buy some seed, because our growing season is not long enough to set seed for everything. However, if we had a year when we could not purchase seed, I would still be able to plant a good variety of healthful foods, even if not everything.

...and golden rice [gmo] will save the world from starvation and vitamin A deficiency! Why would we believe anything the scientists have to say; especially when the GMO tomato will be sprayed with Roundup? A friend who home schools and raises most of her own food discovered that her "wheat allergy" was not from gluten but the glyphosate that is sprayed on wheat at harvest as a dessicant to facilitate an easier harvest. She obtained ORGANIC WHEAT berries; ground them herself and baked her bread from that. She can now eat bread, rolls & cakes again without paying $7 per loaf for "gluten free " . I have noticed that I cannot eat any kind of melons from supermarket as they are also contaminated with glyphosate used to knock down the vines prior to harvest. I grow my own or buy from farmer's market where I can converse with the farmers.

The blue orange tomato called Indigo Blue that I grew last year in Portland OR did not have a strong tomato taste.

So why not eat the blueberries , purple cabbage, and eggplant instead of eating something that isn't originally part of the tomato plant? I like tomatoes just as they are. Mother Nature does not make mistakes which need to be corrected by arrogant humans. Fool Mother Nature, pay Father Time.

There is nothing in the NPR article that mentions that cross pollination could happen and pass the GMO traits into traditional crops. If that happens will every tomato eventually carry that GMO mutation? I don’t think any organic/regenerative farmer would want it in their garden.

I always thought that the darker red/purple colors in certain varieties of lettuce, cabbage, and other veggies were already higher in nutritional flavonoids???
