For me, it was the realization that companies wanted me hooked and dependent. Once I realized that I was no longer free and in control, I became angry enough to change and reclaim my independence. In my own self-defense, however, I admit this was a learned lesson because smoking was considered socially acceptable when I was young. it was only later when it was associated with cancer and health problems.

For some people, it is enough to carry a picture of their children and pull it out of their pocket every time they want a cigarette.

Many people substitute coffee breaks and food for nicotine when they should be discovering what lies in their hearts that is negative and could be better filled with virtue.

Hypnosis may benefit many people. It is a gentle way of conversing with the mind/heart and telling it the truth in an acceptable manner not influenced by conformity to certain false preconceptions.

After a few years of not smoking, the craving disappears and you no longer tolerate even the smoke.

I have found REAL licorice to be helpful, too--not the artificially-flavored candy stuff. You used to be able to buy strong-tasting pellets of dark black licorice, but this product disappeared from the market more than a few years ago. You may still be able to purchase imported licorice. -Or, I think a person could learn to make their own licorice hard candy or lozenges from a strong homemade decoction. Most commercial licorice candy is simply artificial flavoring/coloring, corn syrup and GMO beet sugar. The real stuff used to have a very strong flavor, similar to when we made real root beer.
