WebMD reported that Joy Manning, 42, of Philadelphia, gave up alcohol

re: Dry January Proves Advantages of Sobriety

"moderate drinking may be detrimental to your health."

I agree that alcohol, the way it is currently manufactured and consumed, is overall detrimental. Some centenarians and many household axioms (most of which seem to have scientifically credible reasons for benefit), however, attribute their good health to a shot of whiskey or glass of wine a day. Dr. M talks about benefits of some fermented foods, and Almond makes good points on manufacturing process and other lifestyle factors. I truly enjoy beer, in moderation. Is beer proof that God loves us and wants us to be happy? And it has health benefits when consumed in moderation in conjunction with good sleep, exercise, diet, and minimal toxins? I believe so. I shall prioritize other good health practices to help support my one-beer-a-day habit... maybe two-a-day in January...

By "from scratch", I mean roasting your own grain for beer, simmering dried hops, using molasses or natural sweeteners, etc. I go to the local brew supply shop and see everything is prepackaged. The only thing I buy from the brewing supply house is hops and yeast. It is foolish to skimp and use inferior yeast. It helps to choose the appropriate kind of yeast for what you are making. There is such a difference!

Several decades ago, heart attacks in men in Canada were traced to a particular brand of beer and brewing process.

A lot of commercial alcohol and mixes are pure garbage. For example, break down the ingredients you find in a dacquiri at your local bar.

I was horrified to observe a relative who was diagnosed with cancer. We were eating out during his treatment and he ordered several daquiris and had a meal of fried foods and starches. He told me his doctor told him to eat what he wanted as long as he did the chemo. It worked for him and he was one of the lucky ones, but I am not so sure he will not have a recurrence.

There is something else I have observed. When we get together for social occasions, many people our age no longer drink alcohol because they destroyed their livers years ago with crap food and booze.

I observe that most people do not appreciate a good wine or even home brew unless it is syrupy sweet. Nor do they know how to properly pour a glass of wine. They are gourmands and fill a large wine glass to the top.

We have an abundance of home brew of various sorts and flavors. It is a good way to preserve the harvest. I believe a natural product like this also has many benefits. Dark beer was once a traditional remedy for new mothers after childbirth (restorative and hops for milk flow). Mulled wine in monastery hospitals. Etc
