Anyhow, as a horse lover, I have been tossed off of and fallen off of horses too many times to count over the years. I think it was in 1983 that I was thrown from a horse and I don't remember it at all. I somehow got the saddle off the horse and in the car and drove home. I don't remember any of that either. I honked the horn to get my Mom to come out and told her I needed to go to the doctor because I thought I broke something in my back. I was told by the doctor that I didn't have a concussion because I didn't have any bumps on my head. The only reason I know I drove home is that I ended up there and the saddle was in the car. I finally discovered riding helmets and I never ride without a helmet. A riding helmet will not protect you from all concussions as you can still have a high speed fall and not split the helmet open and get a concussion. I had a friend who had that happen.

I am glad that doctors today have a better understanding of what constitutes a concussion. Apparently in 1983 they didn't have a clue. Was also told there wasn't anything wrong with my back and it took years to get my back to normal function.

I don't ride much anymore although I still have horses. Lost some horses I really loved and my last riding accident nearly lost the use of my knee. Knee function is pretty much normal and no surgery was necessary. So while I love horses, I decided I was tired of getting hurt at age 56.

To me, minor head injuries make me think of bumping your head when getting out of a car and not having a concussion. When that happens, I'm concerned that I've lost brain cells. Even athletes in high school head volley and soccer balls so the 80 to 90% sounds about right. The problem is that the damage is cumulative. Am I the only one who believes that heading should be banned?
