It's easy -- Fauci doesn't want the nation to go through the ordeal of Trump getting up there on his bully pulpit for three weeks and push, push, pushing the use of Vitamins C and D to prevent/cure Covid 19 -- when that hasn't been proven. Fauci is a scientist employed by the government. He knows what it takes to get a treatment approved by the FDA -- whose studies are mainly of pharmaceuticals and are funded by Big Pharma. BF doesn't want supplements to be approved to treat illness -- BF is competing with the supplement industry. I don't see that Fauci previously touted the use of Vitamins C and D for immune support -- and then withdrew his claims. He probably still takes C and D daily. Fauci has to walk a thin line. I will say this -- any doctor I've gone to over the last 20 years has encouraged me to keep my Vitamin D levels no lower than 40 ng and preferrably around 60-80 ng.

So in a nutshell it sounds like Fauci used to say that vitamins are safe and drugs could have dangerous side effects. Dr. Linus Pauling said, “Drugs are dangerous. Vitamins are safe!”

Because he didn't. (Or rather, doesn't) Here is Dr Fauci in the March 26,2020 article cited above:

FAUCI: Yes. I think you have to separate the vitamins from drugs that are being touted as being effective or not. For example, Vitamin C is a pretty good antioxidant.

I mean there are studies that say Vitamin C is very good against mitigating the effects of certain infections, and others say there's no effect. It's essentially totally harmless unless you take in a ridiculous amount. So, I have no problem with Vitamin C. There's some interesting situations about Vitamin D. And, in fact, Tom Frieden who, the former CDC Director, wrote an op-ed, I think, yesterday, when he was talking about some interesting suggestions about various regions of the globe and - and respiratory infections that might be related to Vitamin D. No definite proof. But again, you're not getting hurt.

But when you're talking about a drug that might have some toxicity, that's a different thing. That's why you keep hearing me over and over again saying the best optimal way is to do a randomized control trial to determine as quickly as possible whether something works, and if it does, get it out there. If it doesn't, get it off the table.

You could properly say that Dr. Fauci recommended vitamin C then, but doesn't now, but that is not what this article asserts.

I see no inconsistency in the two statements about vitamin C.

"It can enhance your body’s defense against microbes" states a widely observed pattern. Note the qualifier "can". The later quote with "no definite proof" was with respect to respiratory infections. I presume there is less experience in that particular application. The surrounding statements generally support the use of vitamin C. The "no definite proof" statement is appropriate here without the relevant published study of controlled trials. My vitamin C bottle states "supports immune function...*", where the footnote says "not evaluated by FDA". That's the equivalent of "no definite proof", but compatible with "can enhance [immunity]". There is a big gap between personally used and proven to be effective.

One other factor in play is that Fauci is a public foil to unproven claims being bandied about. He has his cautious "scientist hat" on to balance out unproven claims being bandied about. He doesn't seem to want to speculate about potential remedies until they are proven. While I personally like to see what currently unproven approaches might be helpful, I appreciate his wait-and-see stance.
