This is what happens. It happens at least once a century, and more often in milder forms. Epidemics, depressions/recessions, strikes, even temporary job loss...

There is a lesson in all of this. Long ago, I recommended buying a bit extra once a week when you went to the supermarket, even if you only had a dollar or 2 to spend when beans & rice and canned soups were cheap. (Even better if you canned your own.) Plan your food supply a year ahead.

The time to begin putting up food is in spring every year. You can put in at least a small patio garden using intensive space-saving methods, grow sprouts (mung beans store well), U-Pick, forage and glean. Livestock auctions are cheap right now. (Use every part of the animal.) Buy in bulk. (Why buy only a pint when a gallon does not cost much more? Why buy overpriced chicken breast instead of a whole chicken you can learn to cut up and make soup from the carcass?) Buy direct from farmers, etc. Yes, you may have to ask around and do your own research to find different kinds of sources. You may even have to educate yourself to identify traditional food sources.

It is shameful how wasteful Americans have been of perfectly good, nutrient-dense foods and how many times I have heard people say, "I don't like that." They would look at me condescendingly and say, "We don't eat that at our house" and maybe add, "We are not that poor." Or, "Too much work."

Another word for the wise. Now is also a good time to think about putting up herbal remedies for pain--and other products. Also, winter maladies and tonic nutrients. There are many different herbs that will work. Identify what grows locally.
