Researchers at the University of Illinois fed a group of rats, implanted with prostate cancer cells, a diet containing either a combination of 10 percent broccoli and 10 percent tomato powders, one powder or the other, a lycopene supplement or finasteride (a drug used by patients with large prostates), while a fifth control group was castrated.

A little over five months later, rats treated with a combination of both tomato and broccoli powders fared the best in reducing prostate tumors. By the way, the only prostate cancer treatment close to as effective as these whole foods eaten together among those tested by researchers was castration.
