USDA Breaks Environmental Laws By Approving GM Crop

In a refreshing turn away the unethical biopharming of America, a U.S. District Court judge in California ruled the U.S. Department of Agriculture violated environmental laws when the agency approved a genetically modified (GM) kind of alfalfa developed by Monsanto without calling for an environmental impact statement.

But that's only one of two court cases that have gone against the GM tsunami in the past two weeks (the other from a different U.S. District court ordered the USDA to be more thorough in reviewing applications to plant experimental GM crops).

Many experts believe court cases like these are merely speed bumps in the way of agribusiness giants like Monsanto, that's already setting its sites on approval of its second generation of GM soybean crops (MON 89788) built to tolerate the company's Roundup herbicide.

These ruling make me hope Americans may be getting a little bit smarter and wiser as Europeans already are about the blight of GM foods that have likely contaminated the nation's rice supply.
