Can Cranberries Really Be Used to Treat Urinary Tract Infections?

Posted By Dr. Mercola | January 16 2008 | 1559 views

Cranberry juice has long been dismissed as a mere folk remedy for relieving urinary tract infections in women. But two decades of research shows that its juice indeed combats these infections.

Cranberry juice also exhibits anti-viral properties, can prevent cavities, and lessens the reoccurrence of gastric ulcers. However, research suggests that all of these properties, including curing urinary tract infections, apply only to women.

The healing properties of cranberries come from a heavy molecule known as non-dialyzable material or NDM. This molecule seems to efficiently coat some bodily surfaces, preventing infection-causing agents from taking root.
