According to consumer group Public Citizen, Botox and similar injections should come with stronger warnings. There have been reports of 16 deaths after the botulinum toxin spread inside the body.
Botox, as well as the medication Myobloc, are made with forms of the botulinum toxin, which blocks nerve impulses to muscles. There have been 180 reports submitted to the FDA regarding patients injected with Botox or Myobloc, which detail problems such as muscle weakness, difficulty swallowing, and aspiration pneumonia, a condition caused by breathing foreign material into the lungs.
Allergan has estimated that 2007 sales of Botox topped $1.1 billion.
