What's Cholesterol Got to Do With It?

This article in the New York Times reflects the rapid disintegration of the medical orthodoxy that states cholesterol is a key cause of heart disease. In the wake of drug trials that show the drug Vytorin lowers cholesterol levels but not heart risks, an increasing number of doctors are examining the evidence and finding it lacking.

The very language used to discuss heart disease confuses the cholesterol carried in the bloodstream with the particles, known as lipoproteins, that actually carry it. Some of these lipoproteins may pose dangers, but whether or not the cholesterol itself does is much more questionable.

In fact, studies have shown that total cholesterol levels are not a risk factor for coronary heart disease at all, and the cholesterol in low-density lipoproteins is a “marginal risk factor”. A large percentage of people who suffer heart attacks have low levels of low-density lipoproteins.

The main reason cholesterol is assumed to be bad actually comes from circular logic: saturated fat was assumed to be bad because it raises LDL cholesterol, and LDL cholesterol was assumed to be bad because it is the thing that saturated fat raises. But researchers have been unable to generate compelling evidence that saturated fat in the diet causes heart disease.

The good news is that drug companies have made their huge profits before the evidence began to pour in that the hypothesis of lowering cholesterol through drugs was bogus to begin with.

It has been known for years that increasing Omega-3 and decreasing Omega-6 fatty acids to obtain a better ratio has dramatic effect on decreasing the inflammatory state of blood vessels.  Smooth walled blood vessels from a decreased inflammatory state are thought to be not as "sticky or rough" thus not allowing cholesterol to accumulate.  This might be a better hypothesis than the drug company approach.

Oh and remember that the liver makes the majority of cholesterol circulating in the blood and much of it comes from over indulgence in--drum roll again please for Russ--HFCS.

And remember that hyperinsulinemia causes increased inflammatory state in arteries--and a second drum roll for Russ--yes HFCS does increase insulin levels.

To Sachmo's Version Of 'What A Wonderful World':

"I see corn a-golden,
 Refineries too
 I see profit
 For Uncle Sam, not you

 And I think to myself
 What a screwed up world....

 I see skies a brown
 And clouds a black
 The dark damned day
 The nucelar lit night

 And I think to myself
 What a screwed up world...

The glow of the neon rainbow
So iffy in the smoggy haze
 Are obscured on the faces
 Of people eating poor...
 I don't hear babies
Because there are few to grow
 They will lean much more
Than I'll never know (at Vital Votes)

  And I think to myself
  What a screwed up world....
  Oh, nooooo....."

Sigh,

Uncle Russ

The drug companies made huge profits selling cholesterol lowering drugs that caused great harm to people like me. Now that it is being demonstrated that it was all a hoax, they will just quietly sweep the matter under the carpet and move on to the next big thing $$.

These people and their accomplices in the medical — and legal — professions have no concern about the well-being of people who are mistreated and harmed. They should be hauled before the bar and made accountable for their crimes.

Instead they go whistling and skipping down the road. It's grotesque.

I was prescribed Vytorin about 1.5 year ago when my total cholesteroal read "1,000+" yes that is "one thousand plus". Of course I refused to take it.  I've had the genetic hyper-cholesterol readings in my bloodwork for many many years, since the very first time it was ever tested 20 years ago. Every single time an MD looks at my test results, I get "the look of death" from them. Their eyes get wide as if they think I will croak right in front of them. Right after the doc. tried to push vytorin on me, I had an echocardio gram  All normal !! Imagine my doctors shock !! I was recommended for lipid aphoresis (similar to dialysis) and I declined. Now I don't recommend having these high levels of blood cholesterol, but I have yet to figure out if they are affecting anything in my body, the only thing I notice is small waxy bumps on my skin that come and go.  My ONLY remedy to reduce the amount of lipids in my blood is to follow a strict low carb diet (when followed stictly for 2 weeks, my lipid profile is "normal") This should tell you that sugar and flour are what changes my lipid profile -- not FAT !!!  It it too expensive to have the blood lipid profile performed regularly to see just how much starch and sugar I can eat safely. So I live in a constant state of flux here ... love to have that chocolate and ice cream, but knowing it will do more harm than good. Wish someone would pay me to be in a long term study. Most people I talk to tell me "you must be wrong, nobody could live with cholesterol of 1,000" Doctors write me off as the living dead.  Nobody has ever heard of another single person with my lipid levels.  I can say one thing, if its a choice between a statin and high lipips, I'll take the high lipids!! I have tried every statin on the market and within 2 weeks I have serious side effects.

BeanieNutz,
You don't know how happy I am to read your letter!!!! I experienced something very similar. When I was 25 years old my cholesterol was around 220. At the time, that was considered normal (early 90's). I asked my doctor for advice on lowering it and I did everything for 4 years that my doctor said. I gained 50 lbs in that time and my cholesterol went over 360. I was now obese with heart disease. My blood pressure was 145/95. I was exercising 1 to 3 hours a day and eating a 100% organic/vegetarian diet. When I explained this to my doctor at my last visit to his office he called me a liar. I was taking both blood pressure and cholesterol lower drugs at the time. I was so depressed from all of this I had to see a shrink. I told my shrink I could not live like this any more and that I was going to stop taking all medications. He said OK???? I asked why he agreed to my suicide warning and he said because I was a victim of government fraud. He told me to stop taking all the drugs and go consume the biggest steak I could eat. He said to quit eating anything containing wheat, rice, corn, or potatoes and start eating everything that was green or meat. I did this and in 1 month my cholesterol was 140. In the next 12 months I lost 75 lbs and my blood pressure dropped to 90/55. That was 11 years ago and I have never looked back.
