Lollipop Intended to Prevent Tooth Decay is No Sweet Deal

Thousands of orange-flavored lollipops, marketed as Dr. John's Herbal Candy, are currently rolling out of a factory in Grand Rapids, Michigan. The lollipops are infused with a natural ingredient found in licorice that kills the primary bacterium causing tooth decay, Streptococcus mutans.

However, a careful look at the company’s web site reveals that the lollipops are sweetened with the artificial sweetener Acesulfame-K (Ace-K). The use of Ace-K is not exactly being trumpeted by the producers of this “natural” cure, and no wonder.

Numerous prominent U.S. scientists opposed introduction of acesulfame-K as a sweetener, protesting that the safety testing was seriously flawed. The Center for Science in the Public Interest (CSPI) has repeatedly expressed concern that acesulfame-K is a potential carcinogen.

Somehow, I don’t think it’s worth developing cancer just to have cleaner teeth.

i liked russ's comment. succinct.
foxy's earworm is new to me:-) and i liked it.
as to the lollypop..seems to be so stupid an idea i cannot believe anyone would seriously offer it to a kid.. you,d have to be of dubious IQ as a parent to do so.
mind you people buy triclosan toothpaste.and believe fluoridated water is ok too.
something i noticed in Australia, you can buy liquorice here, but!! in a few brands.. it has no liquorice in it, they are using aniseed as a cheapo substitute

Reminds me of the Lollipop song from the late 50's

Lollipop lollipop
Oh lolli lolli lolli
Lollipop lollipop.....

Call my baby lollipop
Tell you why
His kiss is sweeter than an apple pie
And when he does his shaky rockin' dance
Man, I haven't got a chance

I call him
Lollipop lollipop
Oh lolli lolli lolli
Lollipop lollipop.....

Sweeter than candy on a stick
Huckleberry, chimry or lime
If you had a choice
He'd be your pick
But lollipop is mine

Lollipop lollipop
Oh lolli lolli lolli
Lollipop lollipop.....

Crazy way he thrills me
Tell you why
Just like a lightning from the sky
He loves to kiss me till I can't see straight
GEE, MY LOLLIPOP IS GREAT

I call him
Lollipop lollipop
Oh lolli lolli lolli
Lollipop lollipop...

From a rapidly growing old f___  today's music can't come close to the oldies--LOL

Ace K causes several known cerebral and neuro sensory disorders, including but limited to mental clarity (tongue in cheek) and is no way, shape, or form, "natural" or "naturally occurring"...read Doc Mercola's SWEET DECEPTION.

Cathy---I try to learn many new things each day.  Pardon my ignorance, but you helped me learn a new word.  I was not familiar with the term earworm.  I had to look it up---It is a very good word.  Thanks.

Sorry for the earworm though.  The bad news is though if you got an earworm from it--you  probably have lived a few years of life--LOL

Maybe I am the only ignorant one about earworms, but just in case I am not the only one:

earworm
(EER.wurm) n . A song or tune that repeats over and over inside a person's head. Also: ear-worm , ear worm .

Foxtroter, there are a few good songs today. Not many but a few. However there is nothing quite like an old Nat King Cole or Irving Berlin tune. They don't write 'em like they used to!! I learned what "earworm" means today also.

Lollipop to clean teeth?  Is there something wrong with the traditional way?  Chew on some 110-glycemic index wintergreen Lifesavers like everyone else.  Geeez.

I'm guessing that these lollipops contain one of the artificial sweeteners.
