Sleep is a Necessity, Not a Luxury

As the pace of life gets more hectic, sleep tends to get short shrift. It's seen as wasted time. But lack of sleep actually reduces your productivity and puts your health at risk.

Before Thomas Edison invented the light bulb in 1880, people slept an average of 10 hours a night. These days, Americans sleep an average of 6.9 hours on weeknights and 7.5 hours a night on weekends. Experts recommend seven to eight hours of sleep each night, but the amount needed for an individual can vary.

Sleep deprivation has been linked to weight gain, diabetes, high blood pressure, heart problems, depression and substance abuse.

In my experience, employers are not interested in organising their shifts so that employees get time to get enough sleep but are only interested in getting the work done in the most cost effective way. This can often make it difficult for the employee to get the sleep they need.

I've known retail managers who would have to close the store at 12am and then were scheduled to open the next day at 7am. It's absolutely absurd.

Thank goodness for the industrialization of life. Prior to the invention of the light bulb people unhealthily slept excessively (2.5 more hours than experts tell us is best). Today, now that we're all hooked up to the grid, we are sleeping almost exactly the number of hours that experts tell us is best.
