Text-Messaging Injuries Caused by Distraction

Text messaging may not seem a safety concern, but the American College of Emergency Physicians has warned that being distracted by text messaging at inappropriate times can result in serious injury or death.

Teens and young adults in particular are arriving in emergency departments with serious and sometimes fatal injuries, because they were not paying attention while texting.

More serious injuries occur when people who are busy texting collide with cyclists, rollerbladers and others.

I use text messaging a lot because I don't have to put the phone up to my ear to do it and it is quick and to the point. Also, the person receiving can pick it up when it is convenient and it does not involve making a phone call, like picking up voicemail does.

I do see people in traffic driving along looking down in their laps and assume they are probably texting. If I need to text something, I wait until I am either at a notouriously long traffic light or until I have arrived at my destination. One mistake is one too many. I don't intend to make the mistake of driving and texting. Things happen too fast in traffic and we need to have our total concentration on the road.
