A recent study sought to evaluate the effects of krill oil on inflammation. Rats with and without induced colitis were divided into three groups, one of which was given krill oil.
The rats were then examined for weight and disease activity index, colon length, levels of selected cytokines and prostaglandins, markers of protein oxidative damage, fatty acid profile, and expression of selected genes.
According to the study, as reprinted on the website Green Med Info:
“[Krill oil] showed protective potential against ... colitis based on the preservation of colon length, reduction of oxidative markers and ... consistent beneficial changes ... These findings indicate an anti-inflammatory and a protein antioxidant effect of [krill oil].”
