A variety of genetically engineered “drought resistant” corn made by Monsanto has been deregulated and cleared for sale in the U.S.
Monsanto plans farm trials in the western U.S. Plains in 2012. The drought-tolerant trait was created through joint experimentation with the German chemical company BASF.
Reuters reports:
“USDA announced the variety, known as MON 87460, ‘is no longer considered a regulated article under our regulations governing the introduction of certain genetically engineered organisms.’”
