British Medical Journal posts has an editorial documenting how nutrients can be used to enhance response to surgery. The nutrients most often studied for immunonutrition are
arginine,
glutamine,
branched chain amino acids,
omega-3 fatty acids, and
nucleotides
The editorial comments how three studies note that these nutrients produce significant reductions in post surgical infections and also reduce total hospital stays.
This is great confirmation of an earlier article I posted on this topic. Occasionally surgery is needed and when it is, it certainly seems more than reasonable to use nutrition to support your recovery.
