Don't Flush Expired Drugs Down the Drain

The age-old wisdom of flushing medication down the toilet ... is probably the least desirable of all the alternatives of disposing of outdated drugs. Researchers are warning not to flush them as antibiotics, hormones and other medicines are being found in waterways--raising worrisome questions about potential health and environmental effects. Long-term effects aren't known, but scientists worry that exposure to even tiny amounts might cause some harm, at least ecologically.

Most of you know that I don't advocate using drugs unless absolutely necessary, but if you do use them, it is important to know that the vast majority of them have expiration dates on them that are grossly inaccurate. Nearly 20 years ago the military did a study on expired drugs and they found that about 90 percent of them were safe and effective far past their original expiration date.

The conclusion was that drug companies put expiration dates on drugs for marketing, rather than scientific, reasons.
