A large part of this increase is a shift away from natural foods and a focus on cereal-based diets. Just like humans, most pets don't do very well on a high-grain diet. It causes an imbalance in their insulin levels just like it does with ours. The Bones and Raw Food Diet (BARF) is a popular raw food alternative that many pet owners are raving about.
