Cutting Calories May be Less Helpful Than Thought to Extend Lifespan

Wednesday's newsletter had a lead story on reducing your calories to extend your life. However, new research published in Science yesterday shows that the life-prolonging effect of reducing calories kicks in immediately, but only continues as long as one is on the diet. The protective effect of dieting snaps into place within 48 hours.

This research was conducted in fruit flies. It will be difficult to repeat the experiment in mammals as their life span is so much longer. The editorial for Science stated that for most species, aging is so remarkably pliable that interventions do not have to be lifelong.
