Carbs Are Primary Cause of High Triglycerides

Triglycerides are an important risk factor for heart disease, so it is important to lower their levels if they are elevated. Unfortunately, many experts still believe that the way to treat them are with low-fat diets. I wish I would have cited this reference when the Canadian Medical journal published my letter earlier this year on their ridiculous review article claiming low-fat diets are the solution rather than the cause of high triglycerides.

There are few absolutes in medicine, but I have yet to see someone with high triglycerides fail to respond to a comprehensive restriction of grain and sugar carbohydrates. I suspect there might be some cases out there, but I haven't seen them.

The American Journal of Clinical Nutrition is one of my favorite journals and while reading this month's issue I found a reference to an earlier incredibly comprehensive review article that thoroughly covers the history and science of my clinical observation. Fortunately, all of their articles that are over one year are freely available in full text at no charge on their Web site. This review is wonderful ammunition for the resistant traditional medical people who persist in the delusion that low-fat diets are the solution for those with high triglycerides. A more current review is published this month (second link) but only the absract is available.
