Dr. Ron Paul is a Republican member of Congress from Texas. He provides us with some powerful documentation on government projections on what they believe the ultimate tax burden will be for the new expanded Medicare drug program. This is just what we needed, a federal subsidy to the greedy drug companies so that elderly Americans can continue to use expensive Band-Aids to treat symptoms rather than treating the real cause of their disease.

Congress claims the program will cost $400 billion over the next 10 years, but government cost projections cannot be trusted. Medicare today costs seven times more than originally estimated. Private economists estimate the true cost will be closer to $3 trillion or $4 trillion over 10 years, but even the government?s figure of $400 billion represents the largest entitlement increase since the failed Great Society programs of the 1960s.

Hey folks, this is a half a trillion dollars. Now I'm from Illinois, home of Senator Everett Dirksen who was fond of saying when he was referring to the Defense Department budget, 'a billion dollars here, a billion dollars there and before you know it you are talking real money.' Please let us remember that this is one-half trillion dollars in addition to the $2 trillion dollars that we are already spending on health care costs.

Our country is unable to support these ridiculous outlays for too much longer without devastating effects on our economy. We will be paying the bill with many people's jobs in the near future if this nonsense persists. We live in a global economy. China and India are not impaired by this chain of debt to the drug companies and this cultural drug dependency will cost us severely unless we wake up and realize what is happening to our country.
