UK to Ban Antidepressants in Kids

Modern antidepressant drugs, which have made billions for the pharmaceutical industry, will be banned from use in children today because of evidence, suppressed for years, that they can cause young patients to become suicidal. The Medicines and Healthcare Products Regulatory Agency (MHRA) told doctors in England earlier this week not to prescribe all but one of the antidepressants known as selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs). The exception is Prozac, which is licensed for use in depressed children in the United States. This is good news for the kids in England but the kids in the United States are still exposed to an ever increasing use of psychiatric drugs. The number of children taking such drugs has more than tripled from 1987 to the present. This is particularly tragic because simple measures like cod liver oil and restricting grains and sugars are far more effective than these band-aid medications.
