Obesity Raising Disability Rate

Disability rates rose sharply in the last two decades among those under 60, and obesity appears to be the main reason. The number of people aged 30 to 49 years who could not care for themselves or do other routine tasks increased by more than half from 1984 to 2000. The leading causes of disability are mental illness and musculoskeletal problems--such as chronic back pain--which are linked to obesity. This is not surprising as just last year obesity was named the fastest growing health threat in the United States.
