Obesity may Soon be Top Cause of Death in the U.S.

If Americans continue to get fatter at current rates, by 2020 about one in five health-care dollars spent on people aged 50 to 69 could be due to obesity--that's 50 percent more than now. Researchers are saying that the negative consequences of obesity may even exceed those of smoking or problem drinking, and the continuing increase in unhealthy weight has the potential to undo many of the health advances, such as improvements in public health and other health behaviors, that typically reduces disability among this age group. This means that we will be spending even more money on health care, and it could be significantly more when you consider that a population of people who are considered morbidly obese double health care spending.
