Angell's Expose On Drug Companies Reviewed

You may remember the newsletter piece I wrote a couple of weeks ago about Dr. Marcia Angell, the former editor of New England Journal of Medicine (NEJM), who wrote the book, titled "The Truth about Drug Companies: How They Deceive Us and What to Do About It," detailing the accounts of the drug companies and their close ties with some of the leading medical journals, doctors and government agencies. With some two decades at NEJM, Dr. Angell must have many interesting stories to tell.

Since the story, CBS' 60 Minutes has rerun a interview segment with Dr. Angell about her experiences at NEJM as fodder for a scathing report on the drug industry. In yesterday's New York Times, Janet Maslin reviewed Dr. Angell's book.

Although Maslin has some minor quibbles with the tone, the information is solid, which heaps even more fuel to my vision that the conventional medical paradigm is long overdue for an overhaul from an emphasis on curing disease piecemeal with "bandaids" to healthier common sense solutions.
