Congratulations Boston

The Red Sox, the team that perfected heartbreak, silenced the Cardinals, 3-0, in Game 4 to win their first World Series since 1918. While I am absolutely no baseball fan and haven't watched a baseball game in probably over 25 years it was wonderful to follow the extraordinary comeback of the Boston Red Sox. They were the first baseball team to come back from being down 3-0 in a series and win. They were also, surprisingly, the first team to win eight consecutive playoff games in a single postseason.

However, it is interesting to note that virtually none of the stories about the Red Sox indicate that there are other baseball teams that have not won a World Series even longer than the previously "cursed" Red Sox, and guess what? Both of those teams come from Chicago, my home town.

If you go to the Major League Baseball Web Site you will see that the last time the Chicago White Sox won the World Series was in 1917, one year before the Red Sox. But, without ANY question, the most tragic post season team in the history of sports is the Chicago Cubs. They have not won a World Series since 1908 - - 96 years ago. That is ten years longer than the Red Sox.

Not sure if the Cubs will ever win the World Series in my life time (I would probably watch some of those games), but if they do I sure hope they have a bigger celebration. But, even if they do, it would be nearly impossible to eclipse the drama of the Red Sox's dramatic come from behind victory over the Yankees and incredible sweep of the team with the best record in major league baseball. Very impressive indeed.
