Work-Life Balance Movement Growing

There are four essential components you must master to achieve optimal health:

But what if you have so little time to do anything aside from the essentials? So much so that you find yourself speedreading fairy tales to your kids at bedtime just to save a few extra minutes of personal time? If that scenario (based on a true story) sounds familiar, you might be interested in the international "Slow" Movement, a growing group of people around the world who work to achieve the right balance between home and work.

In particular, one American organization, Slow Food USA, caught my interest, not only for its solid growth over the past four years to more than 12,000 members nationwide, but its stated goals:

  • Recognizing that the enjoyment of wholesome food is essential to the pursuit of happiness
  • Better stewardship of the land and ecologically sound food production
  • Reviving the kitchen and the table as centers of pleasure, culture, and community
  • Living a slower and more harmonious rhythm of life

Part of the movement is centered around slowing down enough to not only enjoy food but spend time eating, not just at a desk or in front of the TV, according to Slow Food USA. And when you slow down a little bit to spend time eating a meal with your family, chances are pretty good it will be far healthier for you and your family than grabbing a bag of food from the nearest fast food restaurant.
