The Truth About Soy

Soy is a hotly debated product among those who sell its nutritional value as well as consumers who eat it. The argument: The highly debatable health value of nonfermented soy found in a great many processed foods versus fermented soy, a much healthier alternative.

This recent Guardian piece is definitely worth your time to review because it gives you some concrete reasons, apart from the dietary ones, why you ought to be concerned about the almost manic spread of soya and how it's virtually impossible to avoid.

Some interesting factoids to chew on:

  • Soy is present in more than 70 percent of all supermarket products and widely used by most fast food chains.
  • A British researcher found the more soy a man eats, the more difficulty he will have in fertilizing an egg.
  • Some 90 percent of the 200 million tons of soy produced around the world each year is used to feed animals.
  • Due to the demand for soy, Argentina is losing almost 25,000 acres of forest annually. The World Wide Fund for Nature estimates an area in South America about the size of Great Britain will have been wiped out by 2020, thanks to soy farming.

Understand that I'm not opposed to soy consumption, only improper soy consumption. Fermented soy, which includes natto, miso and tempeh, is a healthy food and should be consumed by the masses. However, soy formula is an abomination that has caused much damage to the children of this country and should be immediately banned for sale throughout the world.
