Stop Diabetes Early For Your Kids' Sake

If there was ever a reason to take charge of cleaning up the health of your children, this new study offers plenty of them. Scientists found taking an aggressive approach to lower high cholesterol in patients with type 1 diabetes, also known as "juvenile diabetes," an autoimmune disease that typically develops at a young age, could protect their vision as well as their cardiovascular health.

Patients with the highest levels of low-density lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterol had twice the risk of developing a visual problem called macular edema, or fluid in the macula of the eye, compared to those with the lowest LDL levels. However, patients with the highest ratio of total cholesterol to high-density lipoprotein (HDL) cholesterol had a fourfold increased risk of this eye disorder.

The study followed some 1,400 patients with type 1 diabetes for more than six years and is the largest investigation of its kind to date to evaluate the relationship between clinically significant macular edema and blood cholesterol levels.

Type 1 diabetes is a tragic disease and my heart goes out to all those who are afflicted with it. Unlike the far more common type 2 diabetes, there is very little you can do to actually "cure" the disease. You just need to do the best you can with the imperfect tools currently available. So it seem reasonably prudent to me to commend that you implement any suggestions that decrease the risk of type 1 diabetes.

Apart from reconfiguring their eating habits based on their nutritional type, one solid way to reduce your kids' risks of type 1 diabetes: Help them get more vitamin D!
