Green Tea Polyphenols A Potent Cancer Weapon

You may remember an article I posted earlier this year about the polyphenols in green tea being more effective at fighting the progression of cancer than the antioxidants found in red wine, grapes and peanuts.

Scientists have recently discovered how those polyphenols help prevent the spread of prostate cancer: These chemicals target molecular pathways that shut down the proliferation and spread of tumor cells, as well as inhibiting the growth of tumor nurturing blood vessels.

Green tea polyphenols modulated and reduced the insulin-like growth factor-1 (IGF-1)-driven molecular pathways in prostate tumor cells in a mouse model for human prostate cancer, according to the study. Also, these polyphenols reduced the expression of proteins known to be associated with the metastatic spread of cancer cells.

Again, it appears green tea polyphenols, called EGCG (epigallocatechin gallate), may be another useful tool for prostate cancer. It is important to recognize the nutrients useful to treat prostate cancer are also likely to benefit breast cancer.
