The Magic of Google

This entry is really for those of you that have an understandning of computers. If you do you will have a sincere appreciation for the enormous hardware requirements that allows Google to search over eight billion internet pages. They are one of the most awesome companies on the planet. One of the amazing things is that they pull this off with computers that run on Linux (no fees to Microsoft) and these no name boxes only cost a few hundred dollars each.

  • Over eight billion Web pages, each an average of 10KB, all fully indexed
  • Up to 2,000 PCs in a cluster
  • Over 30 clusters - - this means they have over 60,00 computers that run their network
  • 104 interface languages including Klingon and Tagalog
  • One petabyte of data in a cluster -- so much that hard disk error rates of 10-15 begin to be a real issue
  • Sustained transfer rates of 2Gbps in a cluster
  • No complete system failure since February 2000
  • An expectation that two machines will fail every day in each of the larger clusters
