The CDC has a new health awareness strategy that includes making announcements on social media such as Facebook and Twitter. Coupled with their new “24/7” logo, they’ve literally got you covered, night and day, around the clock, bombarding you with messages on what they think you should do to stay healthy. In their latest blitz, they’re trying to get you to cover yourself 24/7 by encouraging you to slather up with chemicals around the clock―sunscreen by day and insect repellent by night.
The sunscreen campaign isn’t new, but the insect repellent one is, and if you click on the link provided on their latest Facebook post, you’ll be taken to a page with the scary message: “Many people who are bitten by an infected mosquito won’t get sick―many others aren’t so lucky.”
After a spiel on different mosquito-borne illnesses, the sell begins with instructions to stay slathered with insecticide at night by putting “a few bottles or packets of repellent around―in the car, by the door, in a purse or backpack.” Presumably you can pack all those bug chemicals right alongside your sunscreen stash.
