The Damage Done to Health and Life Span: Obesity and Inactivity are by Some Measures Worse than Smoking

Obesity, a sedentary lifestyle and smoking are the three biggest dangers to health and longevity. The extreme damage caused by smoking is widely recognized but new evidence suggests that excess weight may be even more dangerous. How a sedentary lifestyle contributes to obesity and the level of harm caused by such lifestyle choices is the focus of an open source study discussed by the group Fight Aging.

SITTING WORSE THAN SMOKING: Sitting is an independent risk factor for an early death, with a mortality rate similar to smoking. Chronic sitting actively promotes dozens of chronic diseases, including obesity and type 2 diabetes. A lack of physical activity combined and metabolically inappropriate diets could be responsible for a rise in disease and mortality.
