Fungus in Humans Identified for First Time as Key Factor in Crohn's Disease

Named after Dr. Burrill B. Crohn, a physician who first described the disease in 1932, Crohn’s disease is a type of inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) that occurs when an abnormal immune system response leads to chronic inflammation anywhere in the GI or digestive tract – from the mouth to the anus. For the first time since its naming, researchers have identified that a fungus may be a key factor in the development of Crohn's disease, as reported by Science Daily.

PUT CROHN'S IN REMISSION: Once diagnosed, the first question that many patients ask their doctor is, “Can Crohn’s disease be cured?” Unfortunately, there is currently no known remedy for this disease. The only thing that you can do is manage the symptoms, prevent flare-ups, and induce remission. To do this, you must reduce or control the inflammation that triggers the symptoms. In children, treating Crohn’s disease symptoms helps promote healthy physical growth and development.
