Bedtime Yoga Can Help You Unwind

As featured in Today Health & Wellness, a yoga program of five simple poses designed to enhance healthy sleep can be an effective, healthy and natural alternative sleep aid.

High quality rest is one of the most important components of a healthy lifestyle, but sleep patterns can be adversely influenced by environmental factors. Only 34 percent of Americans are getting eight hours of sleep per night, and this number continues to decline. This is an issue that needs to be addressed as sleep deprivation is extremely detrimental to your physical and emotional state.

A lack of sleep has a cascading effect. Poor sleep creates myriad health issues and also compounds existing problems. It is for this reason that so many turn to pharmaceutical sleep aids and other remedies that treat the symptoms but do not address the underlying cause.

Fortunately, there are a number of healthy and natural alternative sleep aids. Exercise including yoga, which can be performed in the comfort of your own bed, is a great way to decompress after a stressful day.

Apart from exercise, there are a number of other simple remedies to insomnia, and following these can help reestablish healthy sleep patterns. The first step is to create an ideal sleeping environment. This is a room that is totally dark and between 60 to 68 degrees F. Avoiding electronic devices throughout the day is not a viable, or desired, option for most people, but turning these devices off an hour before bed may greatly improve the quality and duration of sleep.
