New Studies Suggest Benefits of Exercise for People With Type 2 Diabetes

New studies that took a deeper look at the role of exercise in treating people with Type 2 diabetes determined that both the timing and quantity of exercise can have an impact on people with the disease. One study, published in the journal Diabetologia, found that walking post-dinner brought post-meal blood sugar levels down by 22 percent, ABC News reports. Another study showed that the more exercise you get, the lower your risk of Type 2 diabetes.

It’s no secret that at least half of all Americans do not engage in enough physical activity to prevent chronic diseases such as heart disease and diabetes. That’s why the U.S. Surgeon General last year called for walking to become a national priority.

Federal guidelines recommend getting at least 2.5 hours a week of moderate intensity activity, such as brisk walking. Yet about 30 percent of adult men and women report getting only 10 minutes or so of physical activity PER WEEK!
