Why Women With Heart Disease Get a Raw Deal in Medicine

Cardiovascular diseases represent the main cause of death around the world. Yet, compared with men, women suffering heart attacks are less likely to get treated on time, and their chances of being diagnosed correctly, and receiving beneficial medication and advice, are much lower, according to a study reported by

This is particularly disturbing, but the good news is that according to research published last year in the Journal of the American College of Cardiology, women who follow six lifestyle guidelines can all but “heart attack-proof” themselves. And the numbers are impressive: Women who adhered to all six guidelines lowered their heart disease risk by 92 percent!

Based on that, researchers estimated that more than 70 percent of heart attacks could be prevented by implementing the following: 1) A healthy diet; 2) Achieving normal BMI or body fat percentage; 3) Getting at least 2.5 hours of exercise each week; 4) Watching TV seven or fewer hours per week; 5) Not smoking and; 6) Limiting alcohol intake to one drink or less per day.

Another important study shows that lowering stress in your life can ultimately protect you from heart attacks. Practices such as yoga, meditation, mindfulness training, and EFT (emotional freedom techniques) reduce stress in part by rebalancing your sympathetic and parasympathetic nervous system. By being more mindful, you will likely make better lifestyle choices for yourself and your family. Another recent study found that optimism can cut your heart attack risk in half.
