The link between muscle strength and cognitive function was the subject of a recent PsyPost report. It provided further evidence that educating and encouraging healthy lifestyle choices is the best way to face down the challenges posed by an aging population.

Exercise is the cornerstone of a healthy lifestyle. It is one of the most effective ways to counter act the obesity epidemic that has slashed the life expectancy of younger generations. For millions of older adults, the looming specter of dementia is a stark reality. Fortunately, the benefits of exercise are more than just physical. Research has shown that exercise can protect your cognitive health and help to stave off dementia.

Strength training has been shown to improve brain function and memory. In one study, just 20 minutes of leg strength exercises enhanced long-term memory by about 10 percent. Another study showed that physical activity can slow brain aging by up to 10 years.

The substantial body of evidence demonstrating the link between physical activity and cognitive health is undeniable. The question becomes how act on this information and improve brain health. Strength training has been shown to be particularly effective in this regard.
