Five Health Related Behaviors for Chronic Disease Prevention

The onus is on the individual to buck societal trends and take control of their health. So says a recent CDC study of the health habits of American adults. Unfortunately, only 6.3 percent of Americans are engaging in common sense behaviors that can effectively reduce the threat of chronic disease.

The five behaviors listed by the CDC are “not smoking cigarettes, meeting the aerobic physical activity recommendation, consuming no alcohol or only moderate amounts, maintaining a normal body mass index (BMI), and sleeping at least 7 hours per 24-hour period.”

It is difficult to argue with the benefit of these lifestyle choices but using BMI as a primary health metric is a mistake. BMI is an incredibly flawed tool, and a high BMI doesn't automatically mean you're unhealthy, the way many physicians and health insurance companies imply that it does.

The CDC is a troubled organization. They are long standing proponents of fluoride and recklessly exposed their employees to live anthrax in 2014. It is no surprise that corruption riddles the highest levels of the organization. Nefarious ties with the junk food industry forced a department director to step down earlier this year.

The good news is that accurate health information is widely available from sources not managed by a leaden bureaucracy and beholden to outside lobbyists. You can make a commitment to optimal health by embracing my fitness plan. Another step toward wellness is ditching all processed foods and consuming meals composed of only unadulterated ingredients. Rejuvenating sleep is another crucial practice that can positively influence your health.
