Is High-Intensity Interval Training the Fast Track to Health?

One more time, high-intensity interval training (HIIT) is in the news for its incredible boost and promise for people who say they can’t exercise because they don’t have time. NPR reports that while it’s not a panacea for whole-body fitness, it can help, especially when you’re short on time.

HIIT is one of my favorite workout programs because I believe it can boost both your fitness and your mindset when it comes to expanding your exercise program. The good news is these workouts are considerably shorter than you're probably used to and involve as little as four minutes of intense activity combined with rest for a total workout of only around 20 minutes.

One reason HIIT is so effective has to do with genetic optimization. This kind of activity appears to be “built into” your genotype, which triggers immediate changes in your DNA, improving glucose tolerance, and producing human growth hormone and mitochondrial biogenesis, which is crucial for longevity.

There are various HIIT programs to personalize for your own use. What’s important is that you do make time to exercise. Once you’ve established a routine, be sure to incorporate strength training and exercises involving the 29 core muscles in your back, abdomen and pelvis.

Pilates, yoga and Foundation Training are great for strengthening your core muscles, as are specific exercises you can learn from a personal trainer. Foundation Training targets all the muscles connected to your pelvis, and trains those muscles to work together through integrated chains of movement.
