Want to Raise Successful Kids? Science Says Praise Them Like This (Most Parents Do the Opposite)

If you want to prime your kids for success later in life, praise them for the efforts they make to strategize and solve problems, rather than stressing how smart they are, whether they succeed or fail, Inc. reports.

It’s a given that your child’s physical and mental health depend on you, and that’s why it’s so important they get a good head start to becoming healthy, productive adults with a proper diet, adequate exercise and good sleep patterns. Kids also need unconditional love, the ability to make choices and express their emotions, and to feel heard by their parents.

Adult or child, exercise is one of the pillars of good health, and studies show that even small changes can make a big difference in both physical fitness and brain function. One key for unlocking a desire to move throughout the day is finding exercises your children enjoy. Competitive school team sports are one way, but short bursts of activity lasting 20 minutes at a time, such as bicycling, dancing and even high intensity interval exercises can also be fun and productive.

Overweight and obese children need at least 30 minutes of exercise each day, and may benefit from closer to 60 minutes. But even if your child is not overweight, daily physical activities after school and on the weekends are essential to maintaining that healthy weight. Allow your children to choose activities appealing to them, and remember the trick to getting kids interested in exercise at a young age is to keep it fun.
