The Japanese Practice of ‘Forest Bathing’ Is Scientifically Proven to Improve Your Health

If you haven’t heard of eco-therapy yet, it may be a health wonder you need to check out. According to, there’s scientific evidence supporting this health strategy, and the Japanese have figured out exactly how to do it best with something called “forest bathing.” Basically, forest bathing is just being in the presence of trees, and it’s so powerful it can lower heart rate and blood pressure, reduce stress hormone production, boost the immune system and improve overall feelings of wellbeing.

This is great news as I’m a firm believer that being outside is one of the most important components of living healthy. It’s a simple, relaxing way to soak up sunshine (or the forest’s beauty), enjoy nature and accomplish a number of health benefits, so make it a point to go outside for at least a few minutes every day. While you’re out there, consider going barefoot and trying grounding, which allows for the transfer of free electrons from the earth into your body through the soles of your feet.

If the weather is such that you can’t do this outside, you can also “ground” inside. For optimal benefits use a grounding pad to sleep, stand barefoot or sit on. You can also do yoga on a grounded yoga mat. The benefits of grounding are many, including fighting inflammation.

Good surfaces for grounding include sand, moist grass, bare soil, concrete and brick and ceramic tile. You can even ground while on a plane, by taking your shoes off and putting your feet on the steel struts.
