Patients of Female Doctors Show Better Survival

A review of 58,000 Medicare patient records showed that hospital patients treated by female physicians had slightly better survival records, The Wall Street Journal reports. Published in JAMA Internal Medicine, the study didn’t have any real answers as to why this is true, other than prior research suggests female doctors follow clinical guidelines more closely.

While I don’t suggest choosing a doctor solely on gender, it is worth thinking about. There are other clues you can look at, too, if you’re looking for a new doctor. Choosing a physician shouldn’t be just about credentials and educational background, but also about their personal lifestyle choices.

For example, research shows that healthier doctors have healthier patients. It also shows that physicians with healthy lifestyles are more likely to discuss healthful personal habits to motivate you to do the same — which ultimately helps keep you well.

However, you don’t need a doctor to learn how to take control of your health. The vast majority of deaths in wealthier countries like our own are due to chronic, not acute, disease. And most chronic diseases, including cancer, heart disease, diabetes and obesity, are largely preventable with simple lifestyle changes. Even infectious diseases like flu can often be warded off by a healthy way of life.
