How Consuming Nuts Can Offer Significant Health Benefits

In a world that seems deluged with conflicting health news, you may find it hard to know which news to believe. When it comes to nuts, the good news is that unless you have an allergy to them, they can be a filling snack and healthful, too. Tulsa World recently answered questions about some of the best nuts, showing that some studies show as much as a 19 percent decrease in death rates among high nut consumers.

The health benefits of nuts cannot be understated. Compared to people who avoid nuts, those who eat nuts on a regular basis tend to have a lower risk for diabetes, better cardiovascular health, a reduced mortality risk and greater longevity. And according to the most recent research, eating 10 grams of nuts each day may reduce your risk of death from any cause by 23 percent — an even more impressive number than Tulsa World reports.

So what nuts are the best and how many nuts do you need to eat for the most healthful results? The healthiest amounts are about two dozen almonds or 15 pecan halves per day; studies show there isn’t an increased benefit from eating more than that.

One of the most interesting things about the fat content in nuts is that people who eat a lot of them don’t tend to experience significant weight gain, or weight loss, either. The best nuts include: almonds, pistachios, Brazil nuts, cashews, walnuts and macademia. Just one-third cup a day of your favorite — or a mixture — will serve you well.
