Omega-3 Fatty Acids Are Essential to Becoming an Optimal Human

New evidence confirming that omega-3 fatty acids — the one fat the body can’t make itself — are more essential than ever in keeping your body and mind healthy and strong, Red Planet reports. There are plant-based omega-3 sources, but the best way to get them is from cold-water, fatty fish such as sardines, shellfish and herring.

Time and again, I have emphasized that omega-3 fats are essential to your overall health. And I am not alone — other health experts stress the same, and decades of research have been devoted to discovering the many health benefits of omega-3.

Omega-3 fats are acquired from both animal and plant sources, but there is a lot of confusion when it comes to what type you should take to get the best omega-3 benefits. Many people equate omega-3 fats with fish oil, but you should know there are other options (including eating fish, such as sardines and anchovies). If you’re looking for a supplement form of animal-based omega-3s, however, consider krill oil over fish oil.

Krill oil more effectively raises omega-3 levels compared to fish oil, even though krill oil delivers lower amounts of EPA and DHA on a gram per gram basis. There is no set recommended standard dose of omega-3 fats, but some health organizations recommend a daily dose of 250 to 500 milligrams (mg) of EPA and DHA for healthy adults.

The American Heart Association recommends people with coronary heart disease consume 1,000 mg of EPA and DHA daily while those with high triglycerides may need 2,000 to 3,000 mg per day.
