How to Treat Hemorrhoids at Home

Hemorrhoids are enlarged and swollen blood vessels that are found in the lower part of the rectum and anus. There are four known types of hemorrhoids, namely internal, prolapsed, and external and thrombosed. It may not be the most pleasant topic of discussion, but Femina recently addressed the issue of hemorrhoids head- on and provided a list of home remedies.

Hemorrhoids can be distinguished from other lumps or marks on your body, because they swell, become inflamed or form a clot, and cause symptoms. It’s important to know that not all hemorrhoids look the same; in particular, they look different when thrombosis, or blood clots, occurs in the vessels.

If you or someone you know is suffering from hemorrhoids, you can treat hemorrhoids at home. One natural method is the sitz bath. If you want to try a sitz bath to treat hemorrhoids, sit in a regular bathtub with a few inches of warm water; or, you can buy a small plastic tub that fits over a toilet seat from a pharmacy.

A 20-minute sitz bath is recommended by most experts after each bowel movement, and two to three times a day in addition. If for some reason a sitz bath does not work for you, then you can opt for a warm bath. A 10- to 15-minute soak in a warm bath for three to four times a day may relieve painful and swollen hemorrhoids.

People who get hemorrhoids for the first time often heal faster. Worsened conditions may lead to longer recovery periods, with recurring cases needing an additional two or more recovery weeks. While hemorrhoids are not life-threatening or contagious, they are painful and can cause side effects such as bleeding and itching.
