Americans Use Far More Opioids Than Anyone Else in the World

According to new data from the United Nations, Americans are prescribed opioids six times more than in any other country in the world. What’s worse, The Washington Post says, is that the cascade of prescriptions for these drugs proves that they are not all that effective when it comes to chronic (long-term) pain.

The only question left, then, would be why do American doctors continue to prescribe something that obviously isn’t working? The truths are staggering: More Americans now use prescription opioids than smoke cigarettes. Substance abuse has eclipsed cancer in terms of prevalence, and costs the U.S. more than the treatment of diabetes, and these opiates, in the form of oxycodone, hydrocodone, fentanyl and morphine are killing more Americans than car crashes.

Senior citizens are particularly affected by this, as about 1 in 3 Medicare recipients received at least one opioid painkiller prescription in 2015.

If you’re in severe pain, there are times when these drugs have a place. But if you’re taking them on a long-term basis, my first suggestion would be to see a pain specialist who is familiar with alternative treatments and the underlying causes of pain.

You need a knowledgeable practitioner who can help you attack the pain from multiple angles, giving you both relief and healing. One option is cannabidiol (CBD) in cannabis that has medicinal properties. CBD is an excellent painkiller and has been used successfully to treat a variety of pain disorders. You still need to work with a health care practitioner, though, who can guide you on the most effective dosage and form of use.
