A Defibrillator at Every ATM?

Heart disease is a serious epidemic. Have we gotten to the point where a publicly accessible automatic external defibrillator (AED) needs to be placed at every coffee shop and ATM? CNN reported that these are the ideal locations for these potentially lifesaving implements.

This conclusion was based on a study conducted in Toronto that discovered most cardiac arrests occur within 100 yards of either an ATM or a coffee shop. Proximity was not the only consideration. Business hours and accessibility are also important factors when considering the placement.

A question that needs to be asked is why AEDs are now needed at almost every street corner. The obvious answer is that heart attacks strike suddenly and many people do not realize they are occurring until it is too late. The causes of heart attacks are the subject of debate, but the risk factors are well known.

By some estimates, 80 percent of heart attacks can be avoided with just a few lifestyle changes. The first is a healthy diet. This actionable step can be accomplished by ditching processed foods and consuming only nourishing foods that have been sustainably sourced. This may go a long way toward addressing a second factor, a healthy waist circumference.

A couple common sense steps can also pay huge dividends for your overall health and reduce the risk of heart attack. If you are a smoker, it is advisable to stop immediately, and if you drink, do so in moderation. One of the best ways to address these issues is the Emotional Freedom Techniques (EFT). EFT is a form of psychological acupressure, based on the same energy meridians used in traditional acupuncture to treat physical and emotional ailments for over 5,000 years, but without the invasiveness of needles. EFT is an empowering multipurpose tool that can help cope with stress and positively impact your health.
