National Flour Recall Widened Over Further E. Coli Fears

A flour recall in Canada has been extended to include several flour brands sold in the county. More than two dozen people have been sickened by a foodborne illness that is believed to have originated in the flours, according to E. coli is the bacterium identified in the recall.

While the affected flours aren’t sold in the U.S., we have regular recalls of our own in both processed and fresh foods. But were you aware that one of the most common contaminants beyond what they add to your drinking water is fluoride? It’s true: The foods you eat are also a common source of fluoride exposure, via fluoridated pesticides and fumigants. Fast food wrappers are yet another source of fluoride.

This is why the Environmental Working Group (EWG) urges fast food companies to stop using fluorinated compounds in food packaging, and calls for the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to further restrict the use of them in products that come into contact with food. Additionally, the Fluoride Action Network (FAN) is among a coalition of environmental, medical and health groups urging the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) to ban the addition of fluoride to public drinking water supplies.

The EPA has been served with a petition that includes more than 2,500 pages of scientific documentation detailing the risks of water fluoridation to human health, as the amount of fluoride now regularly consumed by millions of Americans exceeds the doses repeatedly linked to IQ loss and other neurotoxic effects. The petition also urges the EPA to follow the lead of western Europe and reject water fluoridation. “The EPA is the one federal agency with the authority to make this happen here in the U.S.,” they said. “We urge EPA to act accordingly.”
